For his exhibition at Great Western Studios, John Wild will present an interactive installation that explores the relationships between trauma, memory and architecture within the digital age.

A photograph of 10 Ruston Close, formally 10 Rillington Place, will be both projected within the gallery and simultaneously made accessible online. Each time the image is viewed, either online or within the space, a single pixel will be removed from the image. Over the period of the exhibition the image will decompose directly in response to the number of views it receives.

Pierre Janet wrote that, ‘Certain happenings would leave indelible and distressing memories – memories to which the sufferer was continually returning…’. The Traumatic events, which we so readily identify with the location and architecture of 10 Rillington Place, lead to an attempt by developers to repress the memory through the disappearance of the architecture itself. First by changing the name of the street to Ruston Close, then the eventual demolition of the house and the redesigned of the area to purposely obscure the position and layout of the old road. Thereby preventing a newly built house being readily identifiable as occupying the same plot upon which the old house once stood.

Whilst great lengths were taken to bury the memory of 10 Rillington Place, the advent of the internet has lead to the emergence of numerous websites where, like Janet’s ‘continual return’, maps, photographs, and testimonials appear like hallucinations which are trawled in an attempt to return, relive, and understand this moment of violent rupture which continues to haunt the digital collective memory.

The installation is influenced by the location of the Gallery directly underneath the Westway. Whilst Rushton Close wasn’t demolished as part of the Westway clearances it will always be associated with the Westway. As JG Ballard wrote, ‘…this was Christie country,’ when discussing his inspiration for Concrete Island, based on an area of land cut of by the Westway. For John Wild the Westway, like the Internet, functions as a circuit of transmission a transient non-place of constant flow that mirrors the data flows which form the materiality of the installation itself.

About the Artist

John Wild is an artist, anarchitect, and psychogeographical explorer of dataspace. He studied sculpture at the Royal College of Art (MA) and received a 1st class BA honors degree from Chelsea College of Art and Design. He received an ARTSADMIN early career artist’s bursary for his live art work, was selected to participate in East End Collaboration 6 where he received mentoring by Franco B. He has participated in numerous exhibitions, festivals and events including Late at the Tate (Tate Britain) and the Sonic Arts Expo.

A dialogue between Art, Society and technology are Central to John's practice. John works with performance, intervention, sonic art, open source Hardware and software, and explores data as a raw material.

John Wild’s, ‘Self Portrait using Backscatter Radiation’  will be exhibited as part of Head & Whole I, Abbey Walk Gallery, 8th August – 3rd September, 20II.

The inaugural Head & Whole exhibition and programme of events. Curated by Linda Ingham, and supported by The Arts Council England, will be the first in a series concentrating on the subject of human form in contemporary visual arts practice. The show will work around two concepts – first, the tradition of artists making studies of fellow artists and the nature of reciprocity; second – ‘No Fixed identity’ – on the slippery stuff of portrayal and self-portrayal as concept and image.

John Wild’s, ‘Self Portrait using Backscatter Radiation’  will be exhibited alongside twice and current BP Portrait Award finalist Wendy Elia, Corrie Chiswell, Anna Gillespie, John Devane, Margaret Ashman, Maggie Cullen, Linda H O’Grady, Bren Head, Linda Ingham, Martin White, Eileen Bunn, Charles McGill and Dovrat Amsily-Basrat.

In the field of tension between the two locations an overlap of concepts creates a powerful convergence of metaphors for artistic strategies in contemporary art. 'Stockholm Syndrome' is a term used to describe the positive bond some kidnap victims develop with their captor. From the 1970’s wealth celebrity turned revolutionary bankrobber, Patty Hearst (Grandaughter of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst), to the recent revelations of undercover PC Mark Kennedy going native within the current militant activist movements, the Stockholm Syndrome continues to reverberate through radical politics into radical culture. Through live performance, video, fly posting, photomontage and collage this show will explore the territory of emotionaly manipulated shifts of ideological perception when isolated individuals respond to their captors and environments with strong emotional attachments and ultimately adopt the ideology of their extended family. In contrast, a Cargo Cult is a religious practice that has appeared in many traditional pre-industrial tribal societies in the wake of interaction with technologically advanced cultures. The cults focus on obtaining the material wealth (the "cargo") of the advanced culture through magic and religious rituals and practices. This resonates with the expectation that art objects should bring about an experience which is often described as magical, mystical or sublime. The parallels in the fetishization of objects offers a way into looking at works of art through the lense of the phenomenon of 'Cargo Cult'.

Her research project looks into assemblages of sunlight, human bodies and machines. She is particularly interested on subtle modes of communication across bodies of radically different nature. She looks at the ways in which electronic circuits, computational systems, endocrine processes and neurological happenings intermingle. The tools she develops are speculations about the

Vincent is an artist and digital craftsman who exhibited his work in UK and abroad. XXX-Radiation : John Wild becomes the first radiation porn star!

In 2006 I created a number of artworks exploring how states view their citizens in the post 9/11 climate. In ‘Terminal 4’, an A2 duratrans mounted on a light box, and ‘Self Portrait using Backscatter Radiation’, a 78”x 48” Digital C-Type Print, I gained unique access to the images created by the controversial Rapiscan Secure 1000 security scanner currently in use at Heathrow and across America.

The Scanner creates security images of travellers through a process known as backscatter radiation, an image is produced by firing a low level of radiation at the traveller and analyzing the radiation that is bounced back. Radiation penetrates below the clothing and is reflected from the skin (or bones that are close to the surface) allowing a computer to generate an image of the bodies’ surface.

Since 2006 I have been inundated with requests to use the Terminal 4 image, particularly from campaigners against airport scanners in the USA and it has become one of the main image of the NATIONAL OPT-OUT DAY! organised for Wednesday, November 24th 2010.

However the popularity of the image with campaign groups has led to my images attracting a different audience.I have started receiving emails asking whether I can supply more backscatter radiation images and a google search brought up my image on the front cover of the dubiouse looking TSA Scans Magazine.

One email I received from a NY fetish club claims that my image is so popular with their members that they would be prepared to pay a decent price for more XXX-Radiation Porn! It seems that what started out as an esoteric artwork created in 2006 whilst at the Royal College of Art may have inadvertently turned me into the first radiation porn star!

An Interactive Installation created by John Wild as part of the vanishing point Exhibition at Elevator Gallery London [28/10/10 – 14/11/10].

Descartes Corridor made use of a sonic range finder to create an invisible sonic beam running down the center of the galleries corridor from a fixed point at its entrance. When a person entered the corridor, the distance between the entrance and the person was calculated. The distance data was then processed via a speech synthesizer and spoken from a wall-mounted speaker.

Artists Nina Mangalanayagam, Ekua Mcmorris, Majed Aslam and John Wild are currently organizing The Body Politic exhibition.

"The Body Politic exhibition proposes to show the work by four visual artists, who explore the relationship between the corporeal body and the socio-political Body Politic - the organised social system or state defined by a geographic area. The exhibition will expose the fractures that occur when the body is displaced through time and space, moving across borders with its cargo of historical memories, symbols and traditions.

Together the four separate works make a critical comment on how the human body’s desires and needs are limited by their political environment. On how the political body acts to reform the human body; opening pores, framing modes of representation and forming complex links to an ever changing network of political and cultural codes. The codes from the present and the past anchored in the human body, forming fine-grained body-language, gesture, and micro-mimicking, leaking information of its history, its origins, its experience. This becomes most apparent in hyper-modernity’s dislocation of the human body through international travel and migration, exposing it to the gaze of the border with its technologies of fixity, which stifle the complex, fluid and shifting nature of identity"

'Naked' scanner in Manchester airport trial

John Wild is pleased at the news that the Rapiscan Secure 1000 ‘Naked’ scanner will be introduced at Manchester Airport's Terminal 2, and hopes this will be a step to realising his 2008 proposal ‘Sculpture for Airports’. He has sent a copy of the ‘Sculpture for Airports’ proposal to Manchester Airport's Managing Director Andrew Cornish.

The proposal reads:

‘Sculpture for Airports proposes a democratisation of the security at airports by rerouting the naked images of travellers produced by the Rapiscan Secure 1000 scanner, to the portrait mounted flat screen TVs used for plane timetables. This will result in an interactive artwork that both references classical art history and the early experiments in photography carried out by Edward Muybridge, whilst allowing travellers the opportunity to take responsibility for their own security by keeping a lookout for concealed suspect devices.’

As we live , work and traverse the city, town , countryside we leave behind marks, traces of our existence upon the physical landscape.

The development of distributed networked computing has created a virtual layer of space, a meta-Landscape of data – ‘dataSPACE’.

Increasingly, physical space is being overlaid by layers of dataSPACE connected and interwoven by the creation of everyday data. Activities such as using mobile phones, wireless computers, GPS systems, Oystercards, or purchasing items containing RFI tags etc, all mediate between physical space and dataSPACE casting ‘data-shadows’.

These data-shadows, etched into the hardware that enable dataSPACE, will provide a rich mine of information for the future digital-archeologist to unearth, sort and analyse.

John Wild has collected the GSM location data created by his own mobile phone, whilst taking a walk radiating out from the abandoned Leytonstone Woolworths store.

The data was solidified into a series of 7 small metal (pewter)plaques, and embedded back into the physical environment at their corresponding locations.

Maps indicating the location of the data plaques can be obtained and taken away from an installation within the Woolworths store.

Laura Oldfield Ford, We Are bad, London Psychogeographical Association and West Essex Inqalab will be facilitating a ‘derive’(drift) or psychogeographic walk around the area of East London currently being redeveloped for the 2012 olympics. The tactic of psychogeography will be employed to expose the repressed desires of the city and uncover the histories the Olympic delivery authority have attempted to erase. We will plot sites of social antagonism where the demolished and displaced will return to haunt the developers, and obsolete maps will be used to chart the public space barred to us in the 2012 corporate land grab.

The Conduit - ‘Semper Occultus’

On Friday 2 January 2009 John Wild, psychogeographer of dataSPACE, become both a conduit and guide leading a drift through the invisible geography's of microwave communications, traversing Vauxhall Bridge, under the towering monolith of Terry Farrell’s New-Babylonian ziggurat the SIS (Mi6) Building.

Unlike previous 'The Conduit' performances the themes of ‘Semper Occultus’ where silence, disappearance and power.

The performance had three distinct phases.

1) Listening to London’s skyline whilst walked across Vauxhall Bridge. This was characterized by the intense noise of electro-magnetic communications beamed from London's Tower Blocks and Office Buildings which where received and made audible by John Wild's microwave receivers.

2) Silence at the foot of the SIS building. The effect of the SIS building was to block out the electro-magnetic communications, silencing the microwave receivers, creating an eiary quiet reminiscent of entering a sacred site.

3) Listening to Millbank Tower from the beach of the Themes. The drift was lead round the SIS building and down onto the beach to the Themes where the performance was concluded by listening to the erratic and intense texture of data transmitted from Millbank Tower with the inky black of the Themes at our feet.

The Law of the Circle

The world had descended into a cycle of trauma, feeling the need to return to the site of its wound. Trapped in a loop of return, revisit, relive, it had established cyclic time based on the Law of the Circle. It located its wound, not within in its people, but within its architecture. It constantly replayed the Image of its trauma as though it may uncover something new, discover something it had missed, find the missing fragment it required to re-construct itself.

We also felt the need to return to the site of a trauma. Our trauma. It wasn’t great in the spectacular way, but similarly located itself within architecture. The architecture of the bridge. Without knowing the exact location, all bridges became significant and the Albert Bridge became our surrogate. We felt the need to return to this place. To interact with it. To travel back through time, exploring the palimpsest, in the hope of locating a key. The key that would allow us to break free of the cyclic pattern that had been established by the Law of the Circle.

We Are Bad – Bronze Graffiti

Recognising the high art status of graffiti the We Are Bad Collective have had the letters cut from their stencils cast in Bronze. These Bronze Graffiti plaques reading, “WE ARE BAD – PLEASE KEEP AN EYE ON US”, have been cast with polished text on a green Patina background.

A spokesperson from the We Are Bad Collective said, “Given the recuperation of Graffiti into a fine art category, and in recognition of its roll as public art, we thought it only fitting that graffiti artists should start using materials that reflect its new found status”.

On the 2nd April 2008 30 Bronze Graffiti plaques where attached to CCTV camera posts in various London locations.

eBayers and Treasure hunters be warned the WAB Collectives love of the drift means we have placed these plaques in some of the most obscure London locations, (non in Shordich).

In 2008 John Wild sent the following proposal to all major UK airport managers.

The Proposal read: -

Sculpture for Airports proposes a democratisation of the security at airports by rerouting the naked images of travellers produced by the Rapiscan Secure 1000 scanner, to the portrait mounted flat screen TVs used for plane timetables. This will result in an interactive artwork that both references classical art history and the early experiments in photography carried out by Edward Muybridge, whilst allowing travellers the opportunity to take responsibility for their own security by keeping a lookout for concealed suspect devices.

A Drift through the ruins of Post Modernism

We have traced the ruins of Post Modernism along the flight paths radiating from the Genius Loci of the Airport.

The Airport has shifted from the once ultimate post-modern experience, a non-space in which all sense of time and place was suspended, to a locus of struggle and Conflict in which all the anesthetising tenants of postmodernism have been shattered.

Al Qaeda as they sat suspended in the placeless and timeless ambiance of the departure lounge understood in an instance that they where the first truly post-modern fighters, decentered and Deterritorialised, detouring the ultimate symbols of modernity, the airplane and the Skyscraper, in order to puncture simulacra so deep that the momentary stench of the rotting flesh of the real was revealed. A stench so strong that only a new paradigm could mask the scent. A paradigm that would lay waste to post-modernism and aim for our own ideological mobalisation in its support.

The Airport has become the flashpoint of contestation from climate change, terrorism, surveillance technologies, immigration and the transfiguration of the future body.

John Wild transmitted a pirate radio signal constructed from locative data collected by tracking his own mobile phone whilst taking part in a drift around the king x area. The data was read out by an anonymous computer generated voice and broadcast from a secret location.

Radios in Housmans book shop where tuned to the audio broadcast and relayed it back into the streets of Kings Cross via speakers mounted outside the bookshop.

Terminal 4 is a self-portrait of John Wild, produced using a Rapiscan Secure 1000 security scanner. The Scanner currently in use at Heathrow’s Terminal 4 creates security images of travelers through a process known as backscatter radiation. An image is produced by firing a low level of radiation at the traveler and analyzing the radiation that is bounced back. Radiation penetrates below the clothing and is reflected from the skin (or bones that are close to the surface) allowing a computer to generate an image of the bodies surface.

Over the last 15 years there has been an explosion in the use of mobile and wireless communication devices that make use of microwave signals between 50MHz-6000MHz, such as mobile phones, Wireless LANs, General Positioning Systems, Bluetooth devices, etc. Both rural and urban spaces have been overlaid with an invisible geography of microwave communications. As you walk the city you will pass through a whole array of text messages, emails and phone conversations.

‘Invisible Geographies 50MHz-6000MHz’ constitutes ongoing experimental research that utilising performance, phycogeographical Drifts, and audio / video field recordings, to explore the relationship between this new terrain and my subjective responses to the physical environment. Within my research I allow myself to be immersed, drawn, pushed and pulled, excited and threatened by my psychological responses both to the city and its changing architectural zones and through the aural effects of making the cities communications infrastructure audible. I seek the points of Intersection where the Invisible Geographies resonate with my phenomenological experience of the built environment.

Dictyostelium DISCOideum Sound System

The Dictyostelium DISCOideum Sound System was inspired by the Dictyostelium discoideum more commonly known as Slime Mould.

Slime mould is a single-celled organism that lives in cold, damp areas such as on the bark found on the floor of a forest. Slime Mould has been of interest to biologists for a century because of its’ strange behavior. What interested the biologists was that for much of its life the slime mould exists as a multitude of distinct single-celled organisms each moving separately and independently of other slime mould organisms. However under the right conditions, when the weather is less hospitable, these single-celled organisms coalesce into a single large organism, not dissimilar to a slug. The new organism moves as a coherent mass, eventually changing its shape into a plant like form which can survive the harsh conditions with virtually no nourishment. When the weather becomes more hospitable to the mould and food is once again plentiful the slime mould appears to disappear. In effect it reverts back to a multitude of individual entities.

The Dictyostelium DISCOideum Sound System consists of a MP3 player connected to a miniature FM transmitter, creating a portable pirate radio station. The speakers for the sound system are supplied by each participant bringing there own portable radios to the Dictyostelium DISCOideum event. Should the environment become less hospitable to the Dictyostelium DISCOideum Sound System, i.e. the old bill turn up, then the sound system appears to disappear. In effect it reverts back to a multitude of individuals, each with their own private portable radios, ready to re-converge and transform a new space. The Dictyostelium DISCOideum Wireless Sound System supplied the tunes at the 2005 SpaceHyjackers Pirate Island Party.

Launched from gleaming Jubilee line extension, still we’re outside – What the fuck is going on round here.

A brick wall and a drop, that’s the entrance to the Rotherhithe tunnel. I need a drink, I yearn for spatial disorientation, requisite state for the drift. The pub that sits astride the Rotherhithe tunnel is festooned with St. George flags and Union Jacks, hate seeps out of the blood stained carpets. I feel at home but my companions seem uncertain “RELAXX UH !” I comment in a Mark-E-Smith Tourette's yelp. The fact that we look like media students on an away day, peering at the other, doesn’t do much to endear us to the locals. Staring contests with the Hackett draped thumb heads and enforced decampments leave us in doubt of the violent intent. ‘Oi, aint you serving us no more Neville you cunt’. The landlord uneasily pushes our drinks towards us and turns.

Outside the bone heads gather and there’s the sneering immanence of a good bout of Ultra V. As I twitch in pre brawl excitement I’m dragged into the maw of the tunnel. This is the beginning. The cloying damp and carbon monoxide fused with adrenaline head rush makes a dizzying start to the walk. The white tiles gleam like a butchers shop then sink into the mire and sludge of the abattoir floor, red tail lights echo round the pipe like laser beams, shimmering with UV dabs. Keep walking to the air vents, staircase puncturing the pristine tube and leading who knows where. Vents and shafts seem possibilities until the appearance of day glow clad officials barring access. Who told them we where coming? They’d sealed off the stairs but told us the vent led back to the pub. A passage way not to be traversed today. On through the tunnel, lungs seizing, reach for Salbutamol, always forget the fucking medication. A thorax grabbing panic, choking fumes, ‘Low Ventilation – No Loitering’, MOVE.

Hope as the tunnel lifts again. Car horns blare incredulous at our obvious crassness, traversing a submerged exhaust pipe on the hottest day of the year.
Ducts, and vents but no path but straight ahead, incline, elevate mildly and out again on the North side, - Limehouse. To emerge, unscathed, breathing again creates delirium, elation and into the nearest boozer.

Tube Train Trapeze

I first heard about the tube train trapeze artist back in 2004 from a printer friend who was working at Westferry on the Isle of Dogs. A number of printers had reported seeing the strange sight of spectacular acrobatics been performed in the empty carriages of passing early morning tube trains.

Intrigued by these reports I started making early morning rides on the East London Line in search of this mythical acrobat. Eventually I got lucky, it was about 6.15 and I was heading south between Shadwell and Wapping when a north bound train passed providing a momentary glimpse of a figure suspended by her feet from the trains hand rail.

After this initial sighting I felt a greater urgency to make contact, to find out what drove her to go out in the early hours, whilst most people where still sleeping, to carry out these isolated and lonely poetic acts. When I finally caught up with her she seemed amused that anyone should be remotely interested in her morning ritual. I was surprised by her age, early 50's I guest. I spoke to her about politics, about Henri Lefebvres' “Production de l'espace” but she seemed disinterested. She told me that she had learnt trapeze as a child and that through her performances she had learnt the rhythms of the trains, that each tube line was like a musical score composed of sequences of movements, a smooth section followed by a rapid bend, then a crescendo of erratic rocks, a slowing of tempo then the still of the station. I started to imagine her trapeze as a dance, a dance set to the silent composition of the train’s movements.

She told me she was leaving London in a month, that she was going travelling and hoped to find some ware to live in southern Europe. I hoped wherever she settled had a tube network.

The Total Disturbance Radio Belt contains a sound source (Mini-disc player) connected to 5 miniature FM transmitters.

The belt can be worn, turning the wearer into a mobile 5 channel pirate radio station. The belt has been designed to be easily hidden under a coat or jacket.

The Silent Zone

Each of the five transmitters was tuned to broadcast on the same frequency as the top 5 London radio stations. A silent signal was broadcast creating a 25 metre zone, around the belt, within which radios tuned to the five radio stations where reduced to silence. The belt was worn on an extended walk around London's streets on 18/6/2004.

Circles on the Champs-Elysées

On Friday the 14th November 2003, during the European Social Forum in Paris, John Wild joined forces with the Space Hijackers and a group of Spanish activists to create 'Circles on the Champs-Elysées'. The aim was to construct an invisible moving barricade on Haussmann's Champs-Elysées.

We gathered at 1pm at the Metro 'George V' and started by forming a ring of people protecting a circle of space. We then slowly started to move, creating a moving empty circle of space, within the Friday afternoon consumer crowds on Paris' main shopping street. We maintained this moving space until we reached metro 'Franklin D Roosevelt' were we dispersed.
